Devotee of Wands: The Priestess

Devotee of WandsThe Devotee of Wands guards the sacred fire of Wands: creativity and spiritedness. This may be a mood, like enthusiasm or reverence, or it may be an idea, like a plot line for a novel or a concept for a business venture. It can be anything abstract that needs to be protected and nurtured in order for us to live engaged, invigorated lives.

Protecting the Creative Spark

The Devotee of Wands stands guard, because she understands the creative spark fire can go out. Both encouragement and discouragement can equally throw water on the fire. Our enthusiasm can wane if we talk too much, too little, if we’re too secretive or too revealing. Discouraging comments can likewise temper our flame, introducing doubt when our fragile ideas (and egos) need the kindling of belief.

The devotee is guarding the mental, physical, and emotional conditions needed to nurture creativity. The “creative project” may be an actual project, or it may be enthusiastic engagement in our own life. However it manifests, the creativity is our vitality and enthusiasm, and we must learn to nurture and protect it so that we can express it in the healthy and satisfying ways.

Guarding the Labyrinth

This leads us to a deeper metaphor: Inside the door is not just the idea or spark in need of protection, but the very process of creativity itself. As a process, it is a labyrinth of many levels. Each level is a challenge. Successfully meeting each challenge takes us beyond a layer of our personality to our truest expression. In this sense, the Devotee of Wands guards the very essence of our creativity and purpose, the private motivations and internal stimuli that compel us.

The devotee guards this door for two reasons. First, we all wear a mask of ego-personality. We’ve developed it for the very purpose of protecting ourselves. To crack the door open is to crack open our armor and expose ourselves to what we most fear. She is protecting us from that pain.

Second, it’s a fearful, dangerous, difficult journey through the doors and into the labyrinth. To look at ourselves in full awareness is so much more challenging than we want to believe. The Devotee of Wands is a reminder that, in this journey, we must take responsibility for ever frustration, every irritation, every joy, every hope. It must completely and totally reside with ourselves, no one else, nothing external, completely internal. Then, and only then has the journey begun. She guards the door because we have to earn it’s opening – and we have to be ready.
